There is one looming bear case for Photonics $LITE $COHR $AAOI $SIVE That this is cyclical and will end up in oversupply. With lots of the focus on lasers/transceivers. My goal with this post isn't to refute that. We can talk about how much demand is still showing up Or the difference between 'capacity' and 'qualified capacity' Or the different moats that exist for certain porducts. And more. But I won't dig into that now. For those of you that are concerned about oversupply at these layers, I want to encourage you... Don't look at the Photonics sector as 1 general trade. While they generally share sentiment and move in sync, the different layers have different headwinds & tailwinds. Hopefully different companies will be albe to de-sync and the most durable will outperform. Sure, the market can decide it doesn't want to reward a premium multiple. Fine. Let's separate the stock from the company for a sec. Think about it.... Which companies will BENEFIT if there is an eventual oversupply at the laser/transceiver level? > Does more volume here mean more fiber deployment from $GLW ? > Does more laser supply/availability mean that $NOK $CIEN can better meet their demand? > Does more volume mean more components that need to get tested? $AEHR $FORM $VIAV Would love to hear your thoughts around who would be hurt and who would benefit. This industry check from Goldman Sachs provides on angle of clarity, and it shouldn't be glanced over. They labeled: > Optical Cables > Optical Connectors > Optical Devices > InP Substrates Understanding how the supply / demand balance is at each layer is key to understanding how this theme will play out, whether it is durable or not, and what to watch for for signs of cracking. This is one of the biggest signals we have received in a while. $AAPL just raised prices on the MacBook and iPad. The reason they gave, on the record, was higher component costs. Memory chips, specifically. Sit with that for a second. This isn’t a supplier warning about future risk. This is the largest consumer hardware company in the world telling its own customers, in writing, that it can no longer absorb what memory currently costs. $DRAM spot prices are up over 50% since January. NAND is climbing with it. $MU just told the world its entire 2026 high bandwidth memory supply is sold out and the company can only fulfill 50% to two-thirds of orders for key customers. Apple isn’t choosing to pass along a cost. Apple is being forced to. Here’s the part that should reframe how you think about “who wins” in this AI buildout. It’s not the companies with the biggest brand or the most users. It’s whoever controls the actual physical constraint nobody downstream can route around. The companies that will ‘win’ til race and buildout are the companies solving actually constraints in all layers of AI; $MU - DRAM $SNDK - NAND $NBIS - GPU Power/AI Cloud $IREN - GPU Power/AI Cloud $COHR - Photonics $LITE - InP & Photonics $SIVE - Lasers $AAOI - Optical Transceivers $PENG - AI server platforms $NOK - AI-RAN $AXTI - Substrates $AEHR - Wafer & Test Be logic. Will AI succeed without these materials provided? Apple has the brand. Apple does not have the memory. And right now, that’s the only column that matters. For those interested in $NOK ... Nokia’s 6-inch exposure came through the Infinera acquisition, and it is a fundamentally different kind of bet. Coherent, Lumentum and AAOI are mostly laser and discrete-device stories. Nokia/Infinera is a PIC story, chips that fold lasers, modulators, amplifiers and detectors onto a single piece of InP. That changes the manufacturing problem. The die is bigger, the process is more complex, and the yield math is harder, but the payoff is that far more of the optical system gets integrated onto one chip. The new San Jose fab (the 6-inch site) backed by the CHIPS Act is moving through qualification now: “I think I know the new fab is finally flowing gas, flowing chemicals. So it’s -- all the equipment is being turned up. We’re qualifying it this year. It will start production late this year, early next year.” What that fab is built to produce is the key differentiator: “A key thing for us in this... is the majority of the volume that we’re building is this, and particularly in that facility, is this photonic integrated circuit for pluggables.” And management is upfront that integration cuts both ways: “It’s a full photonic integrated circuit. So the die size is a little bit bigger. So that creates a different... yield dynamics.” That’s the trade. A larger PIC removes assembly steps and packs more value onto the chip, but bigger die are more exposed to defects. The 6-inch platform hands Nokia more wafer area to work with. The open question is whether those large integrated devices yield well enough at scale. Important to know that Nokia is building the whole chain domestically, not just the fab. The San Jose InP site is paired with an expanded advanced test-and-packaging operation in Pennsylvania (we just spoke about this a few days ago), because pushing far more wafers out the front of the fab is worthless if packaging becomes the next choke point. By combining larger wafers, more advanced tools and more total tool count, management has framed the build-out as a step-function increase in capacity for complex optical chips, timed to support the surge in 2027 demand. Nokia’s angle is all about internal supply, integration, and control over its own optical-engine roadmap.

To understand why this matters, you need to know what Level 4 network autonomy actually means. Right now telecom networks need human engineers to detect problems, diagnose them, and decide what to do. Level 4 is where the network does all of that itself. No ticket, no escalation, no 2am phone call to an on-call engineer. Nokia already has operators running at 90%+ automation rates and getting new services live in under four hours. That used to take weeks. What changed this week is the infrastructure layer behind it. Instead of building their own cloud stack, operators now plug into AWS for compute, Bedrock and SageMaker for AI, Databricks for data, and Gemini for the agent layer. Nokia brings the telecom-trained models that know what a real network fault looks like. AWS and Google bring the scale. Three of the biggest cloud partnerships in enterprise tech, all announced in seven days. The market is still pricing this with a legacy telecom valuation. $NOK $AMZN $GOOG

Nokia and $AMZN AWS expanded their collaboration to run Nokia’s Autonomous Networks Fabric on AWS for fully self driving networks. The administration spotlight. The Trump administration is holding up Nokia’s multi billion dollar US investment as a manufacturing win, with Trump in the Lehigh Valley near that exact Pennsylvania plant just days ago. The two biggest cloud players on earth, both leaning on Nokia in the same week, plus the government using them as a poster child for US manufacturing. And this stacks on what was already there. A $1 billion $NVDA investment driving the 5G to 6G transition. AI and cloud revenue climbing with a EUR 1 billion backlog. Four insiders buying on the open market last month above where the stock trades today. The story is compounding by the day and the price has not caught up.

It is really nice to see the strength in optics today $GLW $COHR $VIAV $SMTC $AAOI $NOK etc. Especially nice to see $GLW and $COHR relative strength I believe that these are two of the stronger long term durable companies in this industry Also interesting to see the relative strength of $COHR over $LITE . It was much different a few months ago. But anyway, this is how I expect this sector to continue moving as a whole. Base, break higher, reset with sector rotation, repeat. Hopefully higher highs and higher lows in the strongest names. $AAOI will do whatever it wants to do. That stock is crazy. "Nokia, t3 Broadband, and Aureon are deploying an ultra-high-capacity optical transport network connecting a major North Dakota data center development to the Chicago metro area." The regional AI connectivity angle is really worth paying attention to. AI data centers are increasingly being built where power, land, and infrastructure are available. That often means regional markets. Some proof points: > Applied Digital has major AI/HPC capacity in North Dakota > AWS is building an $11B AI/cloud data center project in Indiana > Meta is building a massive AI data center in Richland Parish, Louisiana > Stargate sites include Texas, New Mexico, Ohio, and the Midwest The idea is that AI campuses can be built where the power is. But the data still has to move. Those campuses need massive optical pipes back to major cloud, internet, and data center hubs. That is what 'hyperscale-class regional connectivity' means. $CSCO just gave us AI networking bulls a new datapoint... A single agentic task can generate 450% more network traffic than a human doing the same work. Roughly 70% of that traffic is inference. Nearly 10% of AI flows now carry more data upstream than downstream, versus 0.5% for typical web traffic. And Cisco says enterprise traffic could grow 9x by 2035 with agentic AI adoption, versus 2.5x without it. That ties directly into something I wrote about recently: Scale-across. AI clusters are getting too large to keep in one place. At a certain point, the constraint becomes physical: Power. Land. Cooling. Permitting. Fiber access. Route availability. So instead of forcing everything into one giant site, hyperscalers start connecting multiple buildings, campuses, and facilities together so they can operate like one larger AI environment. Cisco’s report adds the usage layer. Agentic AI turns one request into a chain: Prompt → planner → model call → tool call → retrieval → more model calls → action. That creates more: > traffic > upstream flow. > machine-to-machine exchange > persistent context movement > pressure on the infrastructure underneath the model. Sold my $NOK position in my short-term account today. Rotated into $SKM. Here is why: SK Telecom is not a telecom company anymore. The market still prices it like one. That is the gap. The capex is being reallocated away from tower maintenance and toward GPU clusters, data centers, and B2B AI deployment across Korean factories and robotics operations. This is not a press release pivot. The infrastructure is being built. $100M into Anthropic in 2023. Then a FOLLOW-ON investment just announced. Rather than cashing out ahead of the IPO, SKT deepened the relationship. The stake is estimated at roughly $970M at book value. Some analysts see it hitting the high $2.6B range after listing. Anthropic is currently valued at $380B. With an IPO estimated as early as October 2026, that stake will not be priced at carrying cost for much longer. Then there is NVIDIA. Jensen Huang said it directly: “Telecom networks are becoming national AI infrastructure. They connect people, companies, devices and machines and now they can become the backbone of new AI clouds. With Nvidia DSX, SK Telecom can build Korea’s AI cloud at scale and bring agents, enterprise and physical AI to the companies and industries that power Korea and the world.” SKT has committed to deploying NVIDIA’s DSX platform, with the first AI factory coming online in Korea in 2027. The partnership also includes SKT joining NVIDIA Cloud Partner, plus joint research into next-generation AI factory architectures. The $200M $PENG stake layers in AI infrastructure exposure at the hardware level. Anthropic covers the model layer. NVIDIA locks in the compute. SKT runs the sovereign cloud on top of it. That is not a telecom thesis. That is a VERTICALLY integrated AI stack sitting inside a company the market still prices as a legacy carrier. Wall Street expects EPS growth of 283% in 2026. The stock is up 40.6% YTD. The Anthropic stake alone is worth roughly $2B against a $11.5B market cap. $NOK is a good company. I still like the longer-term 5G infrastructure story. But the near-term catalyst density does not compare. $SKM has the Anthropic IPO on the horizon, a live NVIDIA partnership deploying now, and a market that has not fully repriced this from telecom to AI infrastructure operator yet. $NOK is one of the easiest buy in the market right now. Today, the reason investors are interested in this stock is because of AI. Lets be honest, when you think about AI, most of us focus on Nvidia because Nvidia makes the chips. But those chips sit inside giant data centers, and they only work properly if they are connected together with very fast networking equipment. AI is forcing the world to build huge computing systems, and those systems need networks that can move data extremely fast. That is where Nokia comes in. Nokia builds the systems that move data between chips, servers, and data centers using optical technology, routers, and telecom infrastructure. A big reason investors are now taking notice is the new CEO, Justin Hotard. Before joining Nokia, he worked at Intel running AI and data center businesses. He also worked at Hewlett Packard Enterprise in high performance computing. So his background is not traditional telecom, it is computing and AI infrastructure. That is why investors think Nokia is now aiming at data centers instead of only mobile phone networks. Here is something he said that captures how he thinks about it: “If the smartphone put the internet in everyone’s pocket, Nokia and NVIDIA will put an AI data center there.” What he means is that AI will not just live in big cloud servers. It will spread into everything like phones, cars, glasses, and machines, and all of that will need network infrastructure to connect it. Nvidia also made this view more credible by investing about 1 billion dollars in Nokia and taking a small ownership stake. They are also working together on AI networking technology for next generation mobile networks and data centers. Jensen Huang has repeatedly said that AI is not just about chips, it is about the entire system that moves and processes data. That includes networking, which is what Nokia does. So the simple bull case is this: Nokia is trying to move from a slow growing telecom equipment company into an AI infrastructure company. If that works, it stops being valued like a low growth business and starts being valued like part of the AI buildout. If AI infrastructure spending keeps growing for years, then Nokia’s networking and optical business could grow much faster than it has in the past. Most people get the picks right and still destroy their returns because they size everything equally. 5% across 20 positions. Feels safe. Actually just guarantees mediocrity. Here’s how I think about sizing within a thematic basket: Your highest-conviction theme gets your heaviest weight. Not double. Meaningfully heavier. If I genuinely believe AI infrastructure is the defining trade of this decade, my $NBIS and $IREN positions should reflect that belief. Emerging themes with asymmetric upside get smaller allocations. Still enough to matter if they run. Not so much that a slow start hurts you. $ASTS, $PL, and $ONDS are in that bucket for me right now. Early. Smaller.
