Anomaly Obituary: The Overnight Drift Is Dead. We studied 22 years of S&P 500 data across 500 stocks and split every trading day into two sessions: close-to-open (prior day's 4 PM close → next morning's 9:30 AM open) and open-to-close (9:30 AM → 4 PM). 68% of SPY's total return came in the close-to-open session. For QQQ it was 73%. We built a long-short portfolio to exploit this. It worked. Until it didn't. 2020: +39.7% (Sharpe 2.22) 2021: +177.6% (Sharpe 1.07) 2022: +71.5% (Sharpe 1.22) — **turns out, a paper documenting this exact edge was published mid-year 2023: +2.8% (Sharpe 0.49) — edge collapses 2024: -5.8% (Sharpe -1.07) — strategy loses money 2025: -3.8% (Sharpe -0.46) — second straight year negative 2026: partial year, too early to call Sharpe went from +2.22 to -1.07 in four years. Half-life: roughly 18 months after the paper went public. But the anomaly isn't dead everywhere. For every $1 invested only in the close-to-open session over 22 years: $META → $40 (+117% ann).
