$FTC The E-band plumbing inside Starlink. A monopoly adjacent chokepoint a few people are talking about. Filtronic is a 49-year-old RF/microwave house in Sedgefield, Co. Durham. 186 employees. AIM listed since 1994. For most of its history it was a sleepy UK defence supplier. In 12 months it's rerated 170x. Here's why that's not the top it's the entry. The physics that forces SpaceX to their door: To beam the data from a mega-constellation down to Earth, you must use E-band (71–86 GHz). It's the only spectrum wide enough to handle the traffic. Lower bands are congested and can't scale. But E-band signals are highly susceptible to rain fade and atmospheric absorption. The signal gets obliterated in bad weather. To punch the signal through clouds, you need extreme, brute-force power output at the ground station. Gallium Arsenide (the old tech) isn't powerful enough. You have to use Gallium Nitride (GaN). GaN E-band SSPAs (solid-state power amplifiers) at scale require: in-house MMIC design capability, export controlled packaging, and years of qualification with primes. A handful of Western suppliers can do this. Filtronic is one of them. The SpaceX contract cadence tells the story: 2024: initial $2M order Q2 2024: $9M E-band order Feb 2025: $20.9M follow-on Aug 2025: $62.5M next-gen GaN E-band contract — ships FY27–28 Three contracts in 18 months. Each larger than the last. Cumulative SpaceX work now ~$94M. Why it matters financially: FY25 revenue: £56.3M (+121% YoY) FY25 operating profit: £13.4M FY26: deliberate pause as HQ capex + SpaceX ramp capacity is self-financed FY27 steps up hard as the $62.5M ships. My model gets to £95M revenue / £20M EBIT 90% of FY26 revenue already contracted in H1 And the diversification is real: £13.4M European defence prime contract (Dec 2025) £4.5M BAE Systems ongoing Multi-year Airbus programme UK Space Agency NSIP grant (£1M+) for a 550W Ka-band SSPA Cerus V (47–52 GHz V-band) product launched Nov 2025 opens a new TAM for satellite uplinks Optionality nobody's pricing: Any follow-on SpaceX contract = immediate rerating catalyst Kuiper, OneWeb, Eutelsat, all need the same E-band GaN hardware. $FTC is one of 5 Western suppliers who can actually build it Cerus V opens V-band (100W GaN) for uplinks -> entirely new TAM UK defence / space consolidation history says this is a classic bid target (Cobham, Ultra precedent) The bear case: SpaceX concentration. By FY27-28 they'll be >30% of revenue. Any pause, spec change, or qualification issue cascades through the growth thesis. USD contracts vs GBP cost base adds FX drag. GaN at scale is non-trivial engineering yield and thermal issues are real execution risk. And yes at 283p on a £56M revenue base, the multiple is rich on trailing numbers. My DCF lands at 210p. Consensus 214p. The market is pricing follow-on wins that haven't been announced yet. But this is exactly the supply chain re-rating wave arriving at the upstream layer.
