Great CICC report on SiC and GaN. $NVTS can be an interesting GaN play here but I'm holding $WOLF as a SiC play. Wolfspeed is a pure-play SiC power specialist with a suppressed value. They recently went through a bankruptcy and had to restructure. The market did not forget this and is therefore giving a discount to wolf in comparison to other SiC or GaN players. Here is what I get from the report Step-function value explosion As AI rack densities scale from NVIDIA Blackwell (~140 kW) to future architectures exceeding 1 MW, data centers must upgrade to high-voltage 800V DC configurations. This creates a massive value elasticity effect for SiC. Physical SiC unit demand per MW scales at a strong 83.73% CAGR (moving from 1,594 units in Phase 1 to 9,886 units in Phase 4). Because the industry must migrate from 650V to 1200V and 3.3kV devices, the financial value capture skyrockets at a staggering 144.78% to 379.14% CAGR, jumping from $2k–$15k/MW to $220,000/MW. The 3.3kV Moat: Separating Volume from Value The report shows that server-side applications consume over 75% of physical unit volume (7,486 units/MW) but represent a lower-margin, commoditized volume game where low-cost Chinese competition will fight for market share. Facility-level Solid-State Transformers (SSTs) capture $3 Billion in market space per 30GW purely via 3.3kV SiC MOSFETs. Despite representing a fraction of physical volume, 3.3kV modules command massive ASP premiums (roughly ~$50/unit vs ~$2.50 for standard in-rack devices) due to the immense technical difficulty of manufacturing high-yield, ultra-high-voltage substrates. Risks The report also highlights some risks for Wolfspeed. A first one is cheap Chinese competititon. I'm not too worried about this one as I believe Wolfspeed has a technical advantage. Manufacturing high-yield, high-voltage 3.3kV SiC devices is incredibly difficult due to the stringent requirements on material defect density in thicker epitaxial layers. This is Wolfspeed’s true core competency. While low-cost Chinese competitors are rapidly scaling capacity for standard 650V and 1200V automotive/industrial discrete chips, moving up to ultra-high-voltage 3.3kV modules for Solid-State Transformers is a massive technical barrier. This image proves that nearly half of the entire Phase 4 data center market dollar value ($3B out of $6.6B) is locked behind this high-voltage technical moat. Another risk and a more severe one in my opinion is the timeline. The report statest that in the short term (1–2 years / Phase 1), transitional architectures led by 800V sidecar units "may offer limited upside for SiC demand."The true inflection point for SiC volume and high-value 3.3kV module pricing does not materialize until Phase 3 and Phase 4 (2028 to 2029 and post-2029). As Wolfspeed is still restructuring and trying to refinance debt, they need to find ways to keep revenue growing until Phase 3 and 4.
