$CENX Century Aluminum: Scarcity Assets and the New Profit Regime. Investment Thesis. New: 7/8/26. Century Aluminum is a primary aluminum producer operating in a market structure that has shifted meaningfully in its favor — not through internal transformation but through external forces that have compressed Western supply and elevated regional premiums to historically high levels. The distinction matters for how the investment thesis gets underwritten: this is not a company that has repositioned itself through strategic execution, it is one that finds itself well-situated by circumstance, and the durability of that situation depends on factors outside management's control. The tariff environment is the primary financial tailwind, and it is also the primary vulnerability. U.S. trade protections have created a domestic premium structure that is generating free cash flow at a pace that the underlying aluminum business would not produce in an unprotected market. That premium is real and currently material, but it is a policy outcome rather than a competitive one — and policy environments shift with administrations, trade negotiations, and geopolitical developments in ways that business strategy cannot anticipate or hedge with precision. Mt. Holly expansion is the capital deployment that converts the current favorable environment into longer-term productive capacity. Domestic smelting capacity is genuinely scarce in the Western market, and the barriers to new greenfield development — power costs, permitting timelines, capital intensity — are high enough that existing facilities carry scarcity value that a purely commodity framing understates. The data center power infrastructure angle is an early-stage optionality story worth monitoring but not yet a financial contributor that changes the near-term earnings framework. Middle East supply chain stability is the external risk that sits alongside tariff policy as a variable Century cannot manage. Significant Western aluminum supply flows through or is influenced by regional dynamics in the Middle East, and supply disruptions — however unlikely on a base case view — would affect the regional premium structure that the current free cash flow generation depends on. Commodity price volatility is the cyclical overlay that makes the thesis difficult to hold through the full price cycle. Aluminum prices are determined by global supply and demand dynamics that dwarf the influence of any single producer, and the free cash flow windfall the current environment is generating can reverse with comparable speed if LME prices correct or regional premiums compress. The high-upside characterization is accurate on the current trajectory; the high-risk characterization reflects how quickly that trajectory can change when the policy and commodity variables that created it shift in the other direction.
